This year we will be traveling to where the entire trail begins (or ends): Springer Mountain in northern Georgia.
We will begin heading SOBO from Deep Gap in North Carolina and end at Amicalola Falls, a distance of just over 90 miles. This will check the entire state of Georgia off for us, as well as allow us to see the iconic southern terminus.
Friday we will travel to Amicalola Falls State Park, and stay the night in a nice room in the park lodge. Saturday we will shuttle to our starting point in NC in the morning. We will then spend the next eight days hiking back to our car at the park. There will be a good resupply spot directly on trail and directly in the middle of our trek, but there will be no in town days nor likely and chances for showers. We will arrive back at the park the following Saturday and again be staying in the lodge. Sunday we will drive home.
Elevation-wise we will be much higher in the clouds than last year. In fact, our lowest elevation will be about 2500 feet, which is higher than our highest elevation last year. So get those lungs ready! Our highest elevation will be at our starting point, at about 4600 feet, which is higher than we've been on the trail in any of our trips. We will have many massive 1000+ foot climbs and descents along the way.
