Overview

This year we will be traveling to where the entire trail begins (or ends): Springer Mountain in northern Georgia.

We will begin heading SOBO from Deep Gap in North Carolina and end at Amicalola Falls, a distance of just over 90 miles. This will check the entire state of Georgia off for us, as well as allow us to see the iconic southern terminus.

Friday we will travel to Amicalola Falls State Park, and stay the night in a nice room in the park lodge. Saturday we will shuttle to our starting point in NC in the morning. We will then spend the next eight days hiking back to our car at the park. There will be a good resupply spot directly on trail and directly in the middle of our trek, but there will be no in town days nor likely and chances for showers. We will arrive back at the park the following Saturday and again be staying in the lodge. Sunday we will drive home.

Elevation-wise we will be much higher in the clouds than last year. In fact, our lowest elevation will be about 2500 feet, which is higher than our highest elevation last year. So get those lungs ready! Our highest elevation will be at our starting point, at about 4600 feet, which is higher than we've been on the trail in any of our trips. We will have many massive 1000+ foot climbs and descents along the way.

FRI Aug 2

Drive 540 mi (9 hours) to Amicalola Falls State Park. Stay at lodge. Maybe go ahead and see the falls that night.

SAT Aug 3- Deep Gap Primitive Campground to Plum Orchard Shelter- 11.5 mi

Have breakfast either that we brought or maybe in the restaurant. Shuttle 100 miles (2 hours) to Deep Gap trailhead by AT shuttle driver? Uber? Limo? Hitch-hike? Who knows?

Join the AT, head South. We will be starting at our highest elevation, and heading 11.5 miles while dropping 1500 ft in elevation. We will stay at Plum Orchard Gap Shelter.

WED Aug 7- Whitley Gap Shelter to Woods Hole Shelter- 11.7 mi

This is our resupply day. Mountain Crossings Store is a full hiker shop and hostel with whatever we might need, including gear, meals, hot food, whatever. Maybe we can get a shower? It's at mile 7.7 of our 11.7 day. The last part of the day is a very steep and long climb back up to nearly 4500 ft.

SAT Aug 9- Stover Creek Shelter to Amicalola Falls- 10.3 mi

Back to Amicalola Falls State Park via the AT Approach Trail to our room, then on to the nearest IHOP?
